About 12 pages into this story on a Thursday evening, I had to put it down. Not because I wanted to, but because I knew if it didn’t get put down right then, I would not be eating supper or getting any sleep that night and I just HAD to go to work the next day.

Children of Blood and Bone by Tomi Adeyemi was just astoundingly amazing. Zelie, the angry, heartbroken, yet tough and sassy main character is wonderful. You feel ALL the feelings for her from deep sadness to extreme frustration and everything in between. Even though Zelie is our main character, there are two other character perspectives the story is told from; Amari the terrified princess searching for what is right and Inan the conflicted… well, conflicted sums up the majority of who Inan is.
The main plot of the story, to restore magic to Orisha, is so much more complex once you get into the heart of the book. Themes of segregation, division, power, and family duty all have a place within The Children of Blood and Bone. However, these important themes aren’t just thrown into your face, they are delicately placed within the story to make the reader really Thinkabout them. How did these ridiculous notions of certain human beings thinking they are better than others begin? And how can we prove these thoughts wrong and start making a change?
With all of these deep issues, you may think the book would be dense…but you would be very, very wrong to think that. This book is packed with action and does not slow down…like at all. It was ridiculously hard to force myself to stop reading long enough to eat and sleep during the two days it took me to read it. There is action, romance, huge-furry-awesome animals, and of course the ever elusive magic to fill up this whole new world that you will be sucked into the moment you start reading about it.
The ONLY complaint I have…and this is not a complaint about the book…is why, WHY, did I start another series when the rest of the books aren’t out yet?!?! That ending will definitely leave you on a cliff, but I’m willing to bet being stuck there until next March will be well worth the wait.
Have you read this? What are your thoughts??
